Around 1999, as Valve started work on Half-Life 2 and the new Source engine, they became concerned about how their contract with Sierra related to IP rights. Valve published additional games through Sierra, including expansions for Half-Life and Counter-Strike. The contract gave some intellectual property (IP) rights to Sierra in addition to publishing control.

Valve signed a publishing contract with Sierra Studios in 1997 ahead of the 1998 release of Half-Life. Steam's success has led to the development of the Steam Machine line of gaming PCs in 2015, including the SteamOS operating system and Steam Controller Steam Link devices for local game streaming and in 2022, the handheld Steam Deck tailored for running Steam games. By 2021, the service had over 34,000 games with over 132 million monthly active users.

By 2017, game purchases through Steam totaled about US$4.3 billion, or at least 18% of global PC game sales according to Steam Spy. The service is the largest digital distribution platform for PC gaming, with an estimated 75% of the market share in 2013 according to IHS Screen Digest. The platform also offers other digital content and Valve gaming hardware, including productivity software, game soundtracks, videos and VR headset Valve Index.

Mobile apps to access online Steam features were first released for iOS and Android in 2012. Initially developed for Microsoft Windows operating systems, Steam was released for macOS in 2010 and Linux in 2012. Valve released a freely available application programming interface (API) called Steamworks in 2008, which developers can use to integrate Steam's functions into their products, including in-game achievements, microtransactions, and user-created content support. Users receive automatic game updates, cloud storage for game progress, and community features such as direct messaging, in-game chats and a community market. Steam offers various features, like digital rights management (DRM), game server matchmaking, anti-cheat measures, social networking and game streaming services.
#STEAM CLOUD BROWSE FILES SOFTWARE#
It was launched as a software client in September 2003 as a way for Valve to provide automatic updates for their games, and expanded to distributing third-party game publishers' titles in late 2005. Us too, we’re definitely bringing them back! We need a little extra time to perfect it first.Steam is a video game digital distribution service and storefront from Valve. But you will not be able to access them until that time. Any save that is in the cloud should be preserved until we turn Steam Cloud saves back on.

Send us an email at We probably can’t recover them, but we would love to work with you to learn what happened and help other players.Ĭan I download my saves that were stored in the cloud if I deleted them locally? We have been assured that even existing saves in the “cloud” will be unaffected. Only that you’ll need to transfer them manually if you want to move them between computers. There should be no impact to your existing saves. Thank you again for all of your support and feedback. We can definitely say it won’t be ready in time for our May 14 launch but we are considering this a priority.

We’d like to support Steam Cloud saves moving forward (it’s something we want as players as well!) but will do so with a more robust implementation. (The drive Below Zero is located on will differ depending on where you chose to store the game.) You can find your saved games in the SubnauticaZero\SNAppData\SavedGames\ folder, or by going into the game properties on Steam and browsing Local Files. Should you need to access your save games on another computer, you will need to transfer your saves manually. They should remain locally on your computer and you can load them as normal.

The latter seems exceptionally rare but where saves are concerned, we feel that it is better to err on the side of caution. Steam Cloud saves are currently taking too long for some players, and we have also received a few concerning reports of saves disappearing. For us, this boils down to two factors: speed and reliability. With Steam Cloud saves enabled for the last several weeks, we can say definitively that it’s not quite ready for prime time. We have heard all of your feedback about how Steam Cloud saves have been working for Below Zero and have made the difficult decision to disable the feature.
#STEAM CLOUD BROWSE FILES UPDATE#
As you may be aware, we were excited to introduce Steam Cloud save capability with the final Early Access update for Below Zero, Seaworthy.
